Högemon, Naturreservat

On the eastern side of Högemon, you can see and walk on terraced shelves. They were formed by the waves of the sea, and the clear ledges show how the land rose from the sea in stages.

The Högemon nature reserve, together with the Sörmon nature reserve located about 3 km to the south, are glacial river deposits left after the last ice sheet melted about 10,000 years ago. Högemon's ridge reaches 105 meters above sea level and is covered with pine forest. Sand ridges, ridge hills, ice ridges and other geological formations run throughout the forest landscape and suggest how the landscape was once formed.

The reserve was established to protect and preserve an area of high geological value. The reserve decision and management plan were revised in 2007. Nowadays, outdoor recreation is also to be promoted and habitats created for protected species linked to open sand pine forests with sun-exposed sandy patches and sunlit rough pine wood.

Facilities

There is an information sign at the parking lot. There are marked trails through the area that also connect to the trail between Skutberget and Kil.

The yellow trail is 2.2 km long and the blue trail is 1.7 km long. A rest area and shelter with benches and a fireplace are located along the trail to the north of the reserve. There is also a coal hut in the reserve in connection with a former coal bed.
