Beskrivelse
Skogsbacken with Väladalen is a municipal nature reserve directly adjacent to Tomelilla town. The area has long been used for picnics and recreation. The nature is varied with deciduous forest, wetlands and open spaces. Välabäcken runs through the reserve.
Winged hunters and rare plants
Skogsbacken is located in the middle of Tomelilla and has offered local residents opportunities for exercise, recreation and picnics for over a hundred years. Despite its location close to the town, the reserve has high natural values. Seven different species of bat have been found here, including the rare barbastelle. The brown long-eared bat has also been recorded in the reserve, which is unique because it was the first time the species was recorded in such an urban area. 190 different plant species have been recorded in the reserve, including the orchids May lily and meadow lily.
Birds of Välabecken
Around forty bird species nest in the reserve. Wood pigeons and blackbirds are among the most common species, but along the Vela brook you can sometimes see wintering common terns and kingfishers.
Two-part reserve
The reserve consists of two separate areas separated by about 500 meters of buildings. A hiking trail connects the two parts of the reserve.
Outdoor life
The area has a long history of recreation and today there are three hiking trails. The green trail of 5.2 km takes you to both parts of the divided reserve. While the red loop (1.3 km) and the yellow loop (3.4 km) are in the southern part. In the southern part there is also a shelter and toilet. Remember to take your trash home. There is a parking lot at the sports field adjacent to the reserve. The reserve is within walking distance of Tomelilla station, which can be reached by bus or train.

**Within the area, special rules and restrictions apply to the right of public access.
For example, it is forbidden to:
- have a dog without a lead
- riding horses
- make fires outside designated areas
- camping
- set up a caravan/mobile home
- disturb the surroundings
It is important to note that this is only a selection of the rules.
Full regulations for visitors
In addition to regulations and prohibitions in other laws and regulations, it is forbidden to:
- digging, drilling, painting or otherwise damaging soil and rock
- digging up plants or picking plants for commercial use
- disturb, collect, injure or kill animals
- bring an unleashed dog
- use music or sound equipment
- ride a bicycle other than on landscaped roads
- ride a horse
- drive a motorized vehicle (except for persons with reduced mobility)
- park in a place other than the designated parking lot,
- dumping garden waste or other forms of waste
- camping, setting up a motorhome or caravan or otherwise staying overnight
- make a fire other than in a designated place,
- fishing or otherwise catching fish and releasing fish
- hunting in any form or using any form of firearm (e.g. paintball guns).
Furthermore, it is forbidden without the written permission of the municipal administration
15. erecting signs, posters, inscriptions, signs or similar devices
16. organize competitions and other events without the permission of the municipality (except for those within the framework of school sports),
17. conduct scientific or other research that may damage or disturb the natural environment
18. catch insects, spiders, shells, mussels or other invertebrates other than by netting, hand picking or other selective method with subsequent release in the nature reserve. The release does not apply to single specimens for species identification provided that the findings are registered in the Species Portal and that the collection does not violate the conservation regulations,
19. collect plants, fungi, lichens or mosses other than single specimens for species identification,
20. extend the electricity network when requests for electricity connections are made.
