Beskrivelse
Here you’ll find a mix of dry and wet areas. In the pine forest, you can find traces of fires and pine trees that are several hundred years old—or perhaps “on the trunk,” as they say?
From Dry to Very Wet
From the road, this reserve mostly looks like it consists of pine forest on dry, nutrient-poor soil. But the further west you go in the area, the wetter it gets, and other tree species become more common. In some places, there are denser stands of spruce, and in a few spots even birch trees that likely grew up after a fire.
Fire has ravaged this area
In some places, you can find pine trees that are several hundred years old. Some of the trees show signs of fire, known as fire scars. A few burned stumps and dead trees are scattered here and there.
Dead trees benefit woodpeckers
On the wetter eastern slopes, there are scattered marshes, small streams, and patches of swamp forest. In areas with more spruce, some of these trees have fallen over and lie on the ground as fallen trees. The abundance of old trees and dead, standing trees—known as deadwood—provides ideal conditions for many of the forest’s animals and plants that benefit from their presence. For example, several different species of woodpeckers, owls, and the Siberian jay have been spotted here. The sunlit pine habitats along streams and on marsh islands are rich in insects.
