Three and a half miles inland from the Hälsingekusten coast rises the Älvåsen massif, a couple of thousand hectares in size, mighty, with steep slopes and peaks over 400 meters. Älvåsen is a vulnerable place as it is so high, so there are many fallen trees along the path to the windbreak. Keep in mind that it can be dangerous to move among storm-felled trees. Älvåsens nature reserve is located 4 kilometers south of Hassela and covers 435 hectares. From the top of Stuthällan, you have a view of forests and lakes for miles. In clear weather you can also see the sea. There is a shelter and barbecue area.
The northern path up to Stuthällan is the easiest to hike. The path to the south, which is part of an old cattle trail, is more physically demanding.
The Älvåsen mountain massif rises steeply from Lake Hassela. It consists of varied forest types and environments with species that normally belong in several different plant zones. The variation is related to the high altitude, 474 meters above sea level, and the coastal location, which provides high precipitation and high humidity. Fog is common in this area.
Old spruces and pines
Among the tree species, spruce and pine dominate, but aspen, willow and rowan are also present. You may also encounter more southern deciduous trees such as maple and lime. Some spruce trees are 250-300 years old and there are occasional 400-500 year old pines on the mountainsides. And it is not uncommon for the pines to bear traces of forest fires.
Species-rich in old-growth forest and stream gorge
The old-growth forest is a good environment for many rare mosses and lichens, as well as for birds such as capercaillie, lichen jay and three-toed woodpecker. In the middle of the reserve, there is also a lush stream ravine where, among other things, cowslip, forest fescue and sweet grass grow, three of the country's rarest forest grasses.
Watch out for storm-felled trees
Älvåsen is a vulnerable place for storms, so here and there are a lot of fallen trees on the ground. Keep in mind that it can be dangerous to walk among fallen trees.

Reittiohjeet
From Hassela: follow signs from road 305 about 2 kilometers southwest of Hassela.coordinates: X 1549175 Y 6882637. The path that starts at Älvsjön is a demanding hike. Follow the signs towards Fagernäs via "Basvägen". The path runs along the stream gorge between the two peaks of the nature reserve, but the challenge is still great, as the path first goes down the mountain for 200 meters in height. When you reach the reserve boundary after about 2.5 kilometers, you can either continue the path down the mountain to Fagernäs or follow the "Vallstigen" up the mountain again back to Älvsjön. It makes a few wide turns back and forth across the mountainside because it was not allowed to be too steep. Vallstigen is the path where the cows were herded from Fagernäs to the pasture on the other side of the mountain.
