Sura kyrka

Sura's new church was built in neo-romantic style in 1890-1892, after drawings by architect Gustaf Pettersson. The choir painting by Nils Aron Berge is unique in its kind. It contains several hundred figures, many in life size. There are several biblical stories, local residents, the mill and famous people.

The old church of Sura was built in 1671 of logs and covered with shingles in 1684. It consisted of a nave with a straight chancel in the east and a steeple in the west. To the south was a porch and to the north a sacristy.

Sura old church was abandoned in 1892 when the current Sura church was inaugurated. In 1911, the church was restored and became a meeting hall and community center. It was rededicated as a church in 1967.

Sura old church was destroyed in 1998 in an arson attack, but the sacristy survived. It was decided not to rebuild the church. However, the sacristy was renovated and a memorial site was created where the wooden church used to stand.

The churches are located in Sura next to Strömsholm Canal just west of Surahammar.
