The Mergölen nature reserve is located about 3 kilometers southwest of the center of Sala, near the Sala silver mine. There are several different routes you can choose to get into the area. For example, you can choose to cycle or walk via one of the roads and paths that start from the Sala silver mine. Or you can approach the area from Finntorpsvägen. Finntorpsvägen runs through the reserve area and can either be reached from the south via Västeråsleden (follow signs for Finntorpet) or from the north via Fagerstavägen (follow signs for Mergölen). The reserve's car park is located along Finntorpsvägen and from here you can reach Mergölen's large trail system.

There are rules that you as a visitor must follow. The rules are there to protect the area's natural values.

It is forbidden to:

• dig, chop, carve, paint or otherwise damage the surface of the ground or other fixed natural objects such as rocks and boulders,
• damage living or dead trees and shrubs and damage vegetation in general, for example by burning dead wood, picking herbs, grasses, mosses, fungi or lichens, with the exception of berries and edible mushrooms for domestic use,
• collecting insects or other invertebrates
• putting up a board, sign, poster or permanently marking out tracks or similar.

In addition, it is forbidden without the permission of the County Administrative Board:

• use the area for organized competitions and exercises, camp activities or similar where the number of participants exceeds 500 people.
