Beskrivelse
Tärna is the most recently settled parish in Sweden. In 1832, botany professor J.W. Zetterstedt traveled through the Umeå Lapland. At that time, Tärna had just received its first permanent inhabitants, settlers.
Zetterstedt notes: "Building permanent settlements near the mountains in places where no grain or coniferous forest grows really seems to be a daring attempt. "In the 1970 municipal reform, Tärna was included in Storuman municipality.
TÄRNA DURING THE STONE AGE
The Stone Age finds made in recent years at Tärnasjön are among Norrland's very first traces of humans after the ice sheet. Original sites of King Gustav VI Adolf have now been found to be 9,000 years old. Out on the Norwegian Atlantic coast, ten miles to the west, it is highly likely that people overwintered during the millennial ice age.
SÁMI TERN
Many hundreds of years before Tärna had its first settlers, the Sami practiced reindeer husbandry in the area. Reindeer husbandry still plays a prominent role in Tärna. There are two mountain Sami villages and economic associations here, Vapsten and Ubmeje. The Ume River forms a natural border between the two Sami villages.
TÄRNA FOR TOURISTS
In the early 1900s, Västerbotten and Lapland were promoted as a tourist destination. The magnificent views that Hemavan Tärnaby had to offer were particularly emphasized. As early as 1927, STF built a tourist station in Tärnaby. This was the start of the development of tourism in the area. After the war, in the early 1950s, tourism took off. Several large tourist hotels and ski lifts were built. The 1960s brought major changes to Tärna. The large lakes were now regulated and power stations were built. Large farms and agriculture were put under water. Large amounts of compensation were paid to landowners and to the municipality for the encroachment. In earlier times, the existence of the residents rested on cattle farming, hunting and fishing. Today, tourism is the main industry in Hemavan Tärnaby.
