Tärna Kyrka

The current Tärna church was consecrated by Bishop Olof Bergqvist on July 19, 1908. In 1953, the church got its current appearance after a thorough restoration.

DESCRIPTION

The church is beautifully situated in Tärnaby with a view of Lake Gäutan and Ryfjället.During the restoration in 1953, the choir wall was moved forward, and the old choir became a sacristy. There is now the old altar set. It is beautifully made of wood and soapstone by local craftsmen. The new chancel wall is dominated by a painting by the artist Torsten Nordberg. It depicts the parable of the Great Feast, Luke 14:16-24. Another painting, depicting Jesus blessing the children, is by Thyra Schancke. The baptismal font in Tärna church is also made of soapstone by local craftsmen.Tärnaby has several old cemeteries. The oldest is located further east between the school and the gas station, just above the road. There are many beautiful tombstones of Sami and settlers. The foundations of an older church, built in 1854, are visible just above the upper wall.
