Beskrivelse

"Ödmjukhet" by Christian Eriksson

The sculpture "Ödmjukhet" (Humility) is located on the north side of Mikaeli Church and forms an important part of the church’s artistic and historical heritage. The artist is buried directly in front of the statue.

Artist: Christian Eriksson

Christian Eriksson was born in 1858 in Taserud, just outside Arvika. His childhood home now serves as the entrance to the Rackstad Museum, and nearby lies the memorial home Oppstuhage, which Christian built as a residence in the mid-1890s.
Christian trained as a decorative sculptor in Stockholm and Hamburg, but in 1883 he travelled to Paris, where he remained until 1895. There he studied sculpture and exhibited at salons and world exhibitions.
After spending a period living at Oppstuhage in the mid-1890s, the Eriksson family moved to Stockholm, where Christian worked until his death in 1935. Christian Eriksson became one of Sweden’s greatest sculptors of all time.
He is, among other things, the artist behind several of Stockholm’s sculptures, including The Archer at Kornhamnstorg, Saint George and the Dragon at the City Hall, and the facade decorations of the Royal Dramatic Theatre.
