Beskrivelse
Ritamäki is one of Sweden's best-preserved finch farms and the last finch farm in Sweden to be cultivated and used in the traditional way. Annual haymaking preserves the meadow flora with, among other things, field gentian and hay flower.
The land around Ritamäki was farmed according to old traditional methods as late as 1964 when the siblings Beda and Henning Jansson moved to the nursing home in Torsby. The buildings are owned by Lekvattnets hembygdsförening Link to another website.
The reserve was established to preserve the old agricultural landscape and its cultural and natural values. The area is part of the EU's ecological network of protected areas, Natura 2000, and the EU's Life-Nature fund has part-financed the restoration of this Natura 2000 site.
Animals and plants
Biodiversity is high. The plants found within the reserve are largely typical "haymaking plants". By haymaking plants is meant that the plants are dependent on the land being mown annually after flowering. These include field gentian, hay meadow, hay flower, hay rattle, snakeweed and sedge.
Before your visit
In summer, the farm is shown to visitors by Lekvattnet's local history society, which also serves coffee.
