Nordsjöskogen, Naturreservat

Nordsjöskogen has a rich flora of mosses and lichens with the presence of several rare and endangered species.
The reserve area consists of natural spruce and pine forests. The northern part
is dominated by spruce forest and is mainly characterized by spruce swamp forest.
The spruce stands have a large number of large birches and occasional aspens, gray alders, alders and willows. In some places, the forest is relatively dense and self thinning occurs. There are many dead or dying trees and large spruce logs in the northern part. Stumps from previous felling are mainly found on the edge of drier ground. In the southern part, the forest is pine-dominated and in some places fire-affected. The area is part of the EU's network of protected areas, Natura 2000.

Animals and plants

Among several lichens, mention can be made of short-shafted spike lichen, small spike lichen, brown-powdered needle lichen, Norwegian beak lichen, violet-grey thorn lichen and dwarf beak lichen. The woodland fungi are represented by, among others, the scented mushroom, the starry mushroom, the meat mushroom, the cream mushroom and the woolly mushroom.

Wildlife includes a number of species that depend on old, natural coniferous forest. Capercaillie and wolverine are often startled during walks in the reserve. Goshawks have nested in the area and the abundance of dead and dying trees favors the woodpecker, three-toed woodpecker and great spotted woodpecker. Of larger animals, there are moose and probably also bears in the area, as both tracks and droppings have been found during visits.
