Nedre Lustnäs, Naturreservat

Nedre Lustnäs is located on the island of Pannkakan, which is bounded by Klarälven and Lake Lusten. The area is important for deciduous forest and species that depend on it. Birch and gray alder are the most common trees in the reserve and there is plenty of dead wood, which is a prerequisite for a rich diversity of insects and birds.

The reserve area consists of deciduous forests on moist to fresh soil, partly on old river banks where periodic water-filled depressions create gaps in the forest and allow the sun's warming rays to reach the ground.

In the southern part and along the banks, the gray alder is the dominant tree species and the amount of dead wood is very large thanks to self thinning. In the drier parts, the forest is dominated by birch of impressive dimensions and in a younger layer there is gray alder, willow, aspen, spruce and hedge with incipient self thinning.

Near a farmyard in the northern part, there are a few older and many younger deciduous trees in the form of maple and ash. Smaller areas closest to the water consist of willow thickets. The area is part of a deciduous forest area with high values for red-listed woodpeckers.

The area can only be reached by boat, so there are no facilities for visitors.
