Nattjärnsskogen, Naturreservat

Nattjärnsskogen is a representative piece of Värmland nature with several different habitats, mainly older natural forests in a mire mosaic landscape, but also a rushing watercourse and a granary. At the farmstead, the heathy flora has been preserved both on the farmstead embankment and in the surrounding forest despite the fact that almost 80 years have passed since the farmstead was abandoned.

The area is varied and large parts consist of a bog mosaic with fire-affected pine forest on lean soil, but there are also moist pine-dominated mixed coniferous forest, large pine forest on healthy soil and smaller areas of younger forests. The Halgån river flows through the area, where blocky rapids make trout thrive. In the western part is Bäckelbergssätern, where previous farming and animal husbandry have created a rich flora in both the hay meadow of the farmstead and in the previously grazed forest in the vicinity. Thanks to the variety of habitats, there are also plenty of transitional environments, which creates good conditions for rich biodiversity.

The beautiful and light-open pine forests are easy to walk in and can be experienced all year round, while Bäckelbergssätern is at its most beautiful during the summer, even if you then have to get along with various insects. A hiking trail is planned from the parking lot at Normyrarnas nature reserve, but it is quite possible to get to the moor even without a trail.

Animals and plants

A large number of threatened species have been found within the nature reserve, but most of them are lichens and fungi that are not so intrusive in their presence. In the Bäckelbergssätern meadow, beautiful flowers grow that are no longer so common in the landscape, such as hay rattle and night violet.
