Konsterud norra domänreservat, Naturreservat

In this part of Värmland, the forest is often heavily affected by forestry, but this area is a small, remaining remnant of forest that has not been affected by rational forestry in recent times.

On the relatively flat and blocky ground in the west stands an old, sparse pine-dominated forest of lichen-rice type. The age of the pine forest is estimated at 150-200 years. In the eastern part of the area there is a significant element of spruce with an age of 100-150 years. This spruce-dominated part of the area has a denser forest of a healthy type where the ground layer is completely dominated by a carpet of mosses. Large dry trees and hollow trees are scattered throughout the area.

The nature reserve is originally an old domain reserve. The area was set aside by the Royal Domain Board in 1959 with the aim of preserving "a relic of old-time forests" and an area with really old pines and spruces that now exist only as very small fragments in an otherwise heavily used forest landscape.

The Norra Konsterud nature reserve was established to protect and preserve a natural forest biotope in the south-eastern part of Värmland that has not been affected by rational forestry in recent times. The aim is also to preserve biodiversity in the area, such as mosses and lichens that are unusual and rare in the county. In 1999, the nature reserve was reorganized with the County Administrative Board as the principal when the ownership structure of the forestry company changed.
