Great crested newts live here.
Jan i Myren is a small area of just under 2 hectares of natural forest dominated by spruce on a gentle slope.
The Jan i Myren nature reserve was established to preserve biodiversity and a valuable natural environment. The reserve will also help to preserve habitats suitable for the great crested newt Triturus cristatus. Part of the reserve, "Tjärnar vid Jan i Myren", is part of the EU's ecological network of protected areas, Natura 2000, and it is here that the great crested newt lives.
Conservation of the area is important for the great crested newt to complete its life cycle, both on land and in water. This is achieved by allowing the woodland and other habitats with their flora and fauna to develop freely without external interference. The creation of the reserve also preserves an old coniferous forest with important structures such as dying and dead trees and dead wood.

Rutevejledning
Location: Värmlands län, Torsby municipality, about 12 km northwest of Torsby. From Torsby. North of the roundabout at Toria, turn northwest towards Östmark. Drive 15.1 km and then turn right towards Bastvålen, cross Röjdan. Follow the road 2.2 km and turn right towards Bråten. When the road splits after 1.9 km turn right towards Ötjärnen. After Ötjärnen, the road continues for 1.4 km on a forest road that is not suitable for car traffic. From the turning point it is 600 meters to the reserve through the forest. There is no trail (Bastvålen and Bråten are signposted).
Regler
In the nature reserve it is forbidden to:
- collect or harm invertebrates such as beetles, snails/molluscs and butterflies,
- collecting or harming amphibians and reptiles
- breaking branches, felling or otherwise damaging living or dead trees, standing and fallen trees, and shrubs
- collect mosses, lichens and wood fungi,
- without the permission of the county administrative board, make organized use of the area for commercial purposes, and for schools and institutions to regularly use the area to carry out scientific or other studies,
- drive vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles (quad bikes).
