Tämnaråns kanotled, Tierps kyrka - Tierp

At high tide this is a nice and easy to paddle stretch. At lower water it can be a bit shallow and bumpy around Torslunda. After Torslunda, there is an easy paddle to Skämstabron in Tierp.

You start on the west side of the river below Tierp church. Here it is possible to stop to unload canoes at the bridge. You can park at the back of the church. NOTE that you should not stand in the way of where they store sand and soil.

The river flows here mostly through an open agricultural landscape, but in places it is lined with trees that stretch their branches out over the water. After 1.5 km you come to a rest area at Torslunda. There is a jetty and a picnic table. Just after Torslunda, it can be a bit tricky to get around at low tide as it is shallow and rocky. You may need to get out of the canoe and pull it past a rock.

After another kilometer you will arrive at Fors. Here there is a bridge on the left side so that you can lift and carry past the shallow section under the stone arch bridge. Carry the canoe across the road and put in at the jetty on the other side of the bridge. There is a sign stating that the land is private, but canoeists are allowed to use the dock. However, you are not allowed to stop and rest here. A staircase leads you down the steep slope to the jetty. You can slide your canoe on the logs next to it. Next to the jetty is an old mill from the 17th century. If the water doesn't flow too much, you can also choose to paddle under the bridge, but this is very shallow and rocky, so you'll probably need to get out, walk into the water and pull the canoe past.

The second half of the paddle to Tierp contains no lifts. The river continues to be bordered by fields and pastures, but also areas with trees and bushes. You may be watched by some curious cows as you glide past. The stage ends at Skämstabron in Tierp. Here you take up at the bridge on the left side. At the site there is a picnic table and the possibility to park. If you want to continue your paddle towards Strömsberg, you do not need to take off here but just glide on.

In the summer when the water is not so current, a tip is to start at Skämstabron in Tierp and paddle to Torslunda, back and forth. It will be a total of 7 km.

About Tämnarån's canoe trail Tämnarån starts at Lake Tämnaren and stretches out to the sea at Karlholm, a distance of about 50 km. Most of the river is good for canoeing, but the amount of vegetation, the water depth and how fast the water flows varies greatly throughout the year. The least vegetation is in spring and early summer. In several places, you will have to lift yourself past obstacles such as dam gates or stretches of flowing water. Jetties make it easier to get in and out of the river. Signs with a canoe transport symbol show the way to the next landing place. All jetties belonging to the canoe route are clearly marked.

All this together makes Tämnarån a rather adventurous river. Since the water level and vegetation varies a lot, we do not have full control of how it looks at all times of the year. You as a paddler are welcome to report to us if you think there is something that needs to be clarified or supplemented in the stage description.

Keep in mind:

• If you go out in the spring, you should have some experience of paddling. Then there can be good speed on the water. The water is also very cold and you will quickly get chilled if an accident occurs.
• Never paddle without a life jacket.
• Show consideration for plant and animal life, landowners and other people.
• Keep your distance from birds, especially in spring and early summer when they have eggs and chicks.
• Don't forget to bring a garbage bag. Along the canoe trail there is no one to clean up, put your garbage in the bag and take it home.
• A small branch saw and a tow rope can be good to have with you, if nature has placed an obstacle across the river. If you see obstacles, we are grateful if you report it to us.
