Spjutholmen, Naturreservat

In Spjutholmen Nature Reserve you can experience many different natural environments. In the north you will find boulder-rich land with spruce forests that are 100-150 years old. Along the Dalälven there are many exciting plants and animals. Spjutholmen Nature Reserve can be reached most easily via the public road at Hyttön. The area is located on the lower Dalälven, 3 kilometers south of Hyttön. It covers 137 hectares, of which 105 hectares are land and 32 hectares water.

Until the 1930s, the largest trees were felled and the smaller ones were left to grow. Since then there has been no felling in the area. There are a few pine trees that are over 200 years old.

They have therefore survived both the saw and the storm. In 1954 there was a big wind in the area. There are plenty of windfalls from that storm. The storm-felled trees have now almost completely decayed, but they are still an important part of this natural forest, for example for wood-eating insects.

Valuable for many

Along the banks of the Dalälven there are river meadows and lush riverside forests with deciduous trees. Oak, lime, ash and hazel grow here, and the endangered and rare marsh violet grows in several places in the reserve. There is also a log flume that was built at the turn of the century to facilitate the floating of timber out to the sawmill. Log driving ceased in 1970.

Bird life is rich with both terns and ospreys by the water and woodpeckers in the forest.
