Galgbacken-Frejas kulle

In ancient times, Freja's Hill was a place of worship with several springs nearby. The northern spring is still preserved. In the Middle Ages, there was a gallows on the hill, which demonstrated the effects of punishment far and wide. In the 17th century, however, the gallows fell into disrepair, and in 1696 the county governor pointed out in a letter to the king that there should be a useful gallows in Arboga. A new one was erected on the grounds of the Western Manor, which the owner appealed against, but the magistrate had evidence that the gallows had stood on the site for as long as anyone could remember. After a closer look at the site, they found chair legs and human bones in the ground, so the gallows was left standing. It was a soldier from Kungsör who had committed manslaughter who was the first to be executed on the new gallows. In the future, Västerås County will have a paid executioner. The city of Arboga pays a salary every six months to the executioner Gustav Dalman in Stockholm. In 1910, the last execution in Sweden is carried out by guillotine on Långholmen.
