Beskrivelse
The bay of Swindern, with its dramatic cliffs, is named after the Dutchman Johan van Swindern. In the mid-17th century, he bought land on both the north and south sides of the bay to build a pitch mill. The viscous substance pitch was an important product at the time, used to seal boat hulls, barrels and more.
If you follow the cultural walk along the northern side of Svindersviken, you can glimpse a summer mansion on the other side of the bay. It was built in the 1740s on the site where van Swindern had had a croft. The yellow main building was designed by the famous architect Carl Hårleman. The merchant Claes Grill was the developer. Today, Svindersvik Manor is owned by the Nordic Museum.
