Tyresö kyrka

Tyresö Castle Church was inaugurated on March 9, 1641 with the funeral of the builder Gabriel Gustav Oxenstierna. A funeral procession of 2,000 mourners, including Queen Kristina and Sweden's nobility, marched on foot and on horseback from Storkyrkan in Stockholm to Tyresö Church and were given thanks during the night in the surrounding crofts when a snowstorm broke out and they could not all fit in the castle.

The church, which consists of a tower, hall and choir, has been intact since it was built in 1638-1640. The church is built of handmade bricks from the local brickworks and is surrounded by an older cemetery with a unique arched wall. Tyresö Church is also one of the first three churches built in Sweden after the Reformation.

Gabriel Gustaf Oxenstierna was a visionary with big plans for the future and as it was a long way for the people of the castle, all the crofters and industrial workers to go to Österhaninge church, not only to attend mass but also to be able to baptize their children, hold weddings and bury their loved ones, he first had to create his own parish with a priest and bell ringer in order to get permission to build his castle church. Today, Tyresö Church is one of Stockholm's most popular wedding churches.

The church has been the place where all important and urgent news has been conveyed, from warrants, punishments, notices and announcements. People gathered on the church hill after the service to talk, socialize, sort out problems, gossip, invite to parties and perhaps show off to look for a suitable bride or groom.
