Beskrivelse
Långängen-Kottla is a recreational area with a lot of forest, but it is also home to Lidingö's three lakes and some wetlands.
In the 1970s, Nils Linnman, a nature expert and author who led many nature programs on TV and radio, took the initiative to dam up an almost dried-out marsh. He wanted to create an undisturbed environment for nesting waterfowl. The project was very successful and a number of different birds now come to Västra Långängskärret to nest. The whooper swan thrives next to the marsh at the fence yard meadow. The Långängskärret marsh has partly open water and, in addition to birds, frogs and reptiles thrive here. The land around Västra Långängskärret has been grazed by two Highland Cattle, Eddie and Matilda, every summer for the past few years. They are strategically chosen to keep the land open and thus make waterfowl thrive, an effort that has produced good results.
Östra Långängskärret is a good place to listen to the nightingale, bats can be seen from both Östra and Västra Långängskärret and there are many dragonflies at the western marsh. At the eastern marsh there are willow bushes and many large oaks. Some mushrooms can also be found here.
In addition to cows, there are sheep and goats grazing the land in the area.
Kottlasjön is popular all year round. In winter, a skating rink is plowed and ski tracks are laid, and in summer the lake attracts many bathers. In recent years, the lake has been successfully treated against eutrophication, resulting in a significantly better water quality. The lake has a shelter with a barbecue area, several barbecue areas, a playground, swimming and an outdoor gym.
In Brevik, there is a nice outdoor swimming pool with a pool built into the rock.
Långängen's farm dates back to the Viking Age and in the 14th century it was owned by St. Birgitta's son. Today's building dates from the 1770s and is used as a restaurant. Carl Michael Bellman was a regular guest at the farm. On the land around the farm there are many fine tracks and trails and ancient graves.
Large parts of the area are part of Långängen-Elfvik nature reserve.
