Carl Ugglas park

Carl Ugglas Park, or Djulö Park, belongs to Stora Djulö Manor, which is located just east of road 55. Here you can walk in a bird-rich and scenic environment, which during the spring is embedded in white and blue flowers.

History of the park

The park was laid out sometime in the 18th century by the chamberlain and member of the Academy of Sciences, Carl Hildebrandsson Uggla. Carl Uggla was born in 1725 and in 1786 he inherited Stora Djulö from his mother, Merta Elisabet Rosenholm. His great interest in history led him to publish descriptions of Stora Malm parish. This interest also led him to the circles from which the Götiska förbund was later formed, which admired the old and the "Gothic spirit".

The English Park

Carl Ugglas Park is a so-called English Park. The area was inspired by the English park ideal that emerged in the 18th century, which was a kind of counter-reaction to the strict geometric French parks. The English park is more natural and characterized by lush greenery and contains winding walkways and surprises such as ponds, caves and more.

Fake rune stones

Three years before his death, Carl Uggla had some of his own rune stones built. You can still see these fake rune stones in the park today. One of them reads "Carl Hildebrandson Uggla Lord of St Djulö, Dufweholm, Ekeberg and 1/3 part of Lassona with his wife Marg(areta) Charl(otta) Ehrenswärd Läto Rödia Marken MDCCC (1800)".
