Sträntemölla-Forsemölla, Naturreservat

The magnificent hill landscape south of Rörum is not as well known as Brösarp's hills, but it is nonetheless worth a visit. In the Sträntemölla-Forsemölla nature reserve you can walk across rolling pastures, tall beech forests and rest by rushing rapids.

River Kvarnarnas

Between the hills, Rörum's southern river has cut deep into the bedrock. The power of the water has been harnessed and the reserve contains one of Sweden's oldest water mills. Sträntemölla dates back to the 14th century and even though the mill is not in operation today, it shows a well-preserved old farm and mill environment. Further upstream, in the northern part of the reserve, are the remains of another mill - Forsamölla. Here, vertical rock walls rise around dammed waterfalls. It is a lovely place to rest your legs and take out your picnic basket.

Birds of Forsarna

The river is home to both white-tailed egrets and common terns, and the best chance of seeing them is at the mills and the parts of the river where the water rushes. The water in the river is clean and there is a rich wildlife with several rare moths.

A varied grazing landscape

The great variety of pastures, stone walls, bushes and groves of trees on the slopes provide habitats for many animals and plants. The hazel dormouse has had a strong foothold here and even today you can find the nest that the little mouse built deep inside the densest thickets. Cliff walls, old walls and hollow trees give the bat barbastelle excellent opportunities to find nests, and a variety of butterfly species thrive among the flowering cowslips and almond flowers in the pastures.

Outdoor life

In this reserve there is a marked hiking trail (about 1 km) that takes you past the two mills that gave rise to the name of the reserve, Sträntemölla and Forsemölla. Once at Forsemölla there is a nice waterfall to look at. There is a rest area adjacent to the parking lot along the road that runs through the area. There is another rest area along the trail in the northern part, where there is also a barbecue area. Remember to bring charcoal if you are grilling and to take your trash home. The nearest bus stop is only a few hundred meters from the reserve and is called Sträntemölla.

River of the Mills

The river Rörums Södra Å has cut a deep channel into the bedrock between the hills. The force of the water has been utilized, and within the reserve is one of Sweden's oldest water-mills. Sträntemölla dates back to the 14th century and is, although the mill is no longer operational, an example of a well-preserved old farm and mill environment.

Further upstream lie the remains of another mill - Forsemölla. Here you'll find walls of rock rising vertically along the waterfall. It is a lovely place to rest your legs and have a nice cup of tea.

Birds of the Rapids

Both Grey Wagtail and White-throated Dipper breed by the river, and your chances of seeing them is best by the mills and in those parts of the river where there are rapids. The water in the river is clean and has a rich fauna with several rare Caddisflies.

Regulations

Within Sträntemölla-Forsemölla Nature Reserve it is forbidden to:

• break branches, fell or in any other way damage or remove living or dead trees, branches, or bushes,
• bring dogs (or other pets) which are not physically held on a lead,
• drive a motor vehicle other than on public roads or roads designated for motor vehicles,
• park up caravans, camper vans or equivalent other than in designated places,
• light a fire other than in designated places,
• play music or a sound system in a loud or disturbing way,
• dig, bore, paint or in any other way damage the ground, stones, stone walls, natural objects or archaeological remains,
• place out or put up fixed foreign objects such as posters, signs, notices, or equivalent.

Without written permission from the County Administrative Board, it is also forbidden to:

• catch insects, spiders, snails, or other invertebrates other than with nets,by hand or other selective methods, with subsequent re-release within the nature reserve. This requirement does not apply to one-off specimens of each species on the basis that the record is registered in Artportalen (Swedish Species Observation System), and that the collection does not contravene any wildlife protection regulations,
• collect mosses, lichens, or wood-living fungi except for one-off specimens, on the condition that the collection does not contravene any wildlife protection regulations.
