Skäret, Naturreservat

Skärets nature reserve is part of the grazed landscape that once spread out on the Kulla peninsula (Kulla fälad). There are several old stone walls and parts of the land are cultivated. The whole area is easy to walk in and there are plenty of paths, some of which have been worn and abused for generations.

Fields

The word fälad is mostly used in Skåne. It is reminiscent of Danish times and comes from fæ (cattle) and lath (ancient word for land). Fälad refers to the common outfield where the village animals grazed.

Natural pasture and cultural monument

The field in the north-western part of the reserve has a very long continuity as natural pasture and is an important cultural monument. When grazing increases again, the land will regain its character as a field with heather vegetation.

Pastures and field margins

In several places in the reserve there are pastures with scattered older trees. The pastures are grazed and thus kept open so that the oaks in particular can grow and eventually become very old. The arable land in the reserve is used for organic farming, grassland production or haymaking. The wooded fields are important protected areas for wildlife, small birds and insects. The adder also thrives here. The land is partly kept open by grazing.

Ancient cultural remains

The old-fashioned character of the landscape is emphasized by the beautiful old stone fences and cairns that show that the land has been used by people for a long time. Most of the paths in the area are remnants of old footpaths and roads.

Around the reserve, the settlement is dense and consists of both residential buildings and farms. The arable and pasture land in the reserve is used by the surrounding farms.

Outdoor life

In Skäret you are met by an old cultural landscape with plenty of paths to walk on. Keep an eye out for the rare, all-black adder, which likes to hang out in rocky field hollows. A few hundred meters north of the reserve is the Skåneleden trail (SL5 Öresund, stage 2), which takes you around the entire Kulla peninsula. There are three parking lots adjacent to the reserve. The nearest bus stop is Fjälastorp Falkamöllan, which is in the western part of the area. Remember to take your rubbish home.

Ancient rural landscape

Skäret Nature Reserve is an ancient rural landscape and was once a part of the Kulla Fälad common grazing land. Parts are now cultivated with fodder crops. The whole area is easily accessible and there are lots of paths, some of which have been worn down over generations.

Common grazing land

The common land (fälad) to the northwest has had a long continuity of grazing and is an important cultural monument. As the grazing increases once again, the area has begun to regain its character as a pasture with heathland vegetation and junipers.

Old trees on pastures

In several places within the reserve there are pastures with scattered old trees. The pasture is grazed and thus kept open so that primarily the oaks can grow and eventually become very old. The fields in the reserve are used for organic fodder crops, or as meadows. The tree-covered islets within the fields are important havens for wildlife including small birds and insects. They are partly kept open by grazing.

Wildlife

Some animals you may encounter in the nature reserve are roe deer, common whitethroat, buzzard and meadow brown butterfly. You might also get to see an adder resting on a stony islet between the arable fields.

Stone walls and cairns

The historic landscape is emphasized by the beautiful stone walls and clearance cairns which show that the land has been worked by man over a very long period. The majority of the paths on the site are the remains of old footpaths and roads.

Regulations

Within Skäret Nature Reserve it is forbidden to:

• remove, dig, bore, paint or in any other way damage the ground, stones, boulders, natural objects or cultural remains,
• cycle other than on public or private roads or on in the map plotted paths
• ride other than on public or private roads or on in the map plotted paths
• camp or erect equipment for overnight stay, park caravans, campers or similar
• use disposable grills; light fires of wood or charcoal, or use grills
• bring dogs or other pets unless on a physical leash
• in a disturbing or noisy manner use music orsound equipment
• make any form of construction or erect objects alien to the reserve
• deliberately disturb grazing animals
• dump garden waste
• plant or sow plants or introduce animals
• dig up plants
• drive motorized bicycles other than on public or private roads
• start or land with aircraft or fly remotely controlled unmanned aircraft, e.g. drones, at altitudes below 120 meters above sea level
• place out or put up notice boards, placards, signs, posters or similar.

Furthermore, without written permission from the County Administrative Board, it is forbidden to:

• place out or put up paper strips, orienteering check points or similar devices other than temporarily, maximum 10 days, on condition that contact details and date of erection is written on the objects that have been placed out
• hold or organize competitions or similar events
• hold or organize camping activities or similar events.
