Nedraryd, Naturreservat

For centuries, Nedraryd has been farmed in the traditional way, which has given rise to the area's mosaic landscape with pastures, small patches of arable land and side meadows. There are also a number of other cultural-historical traces such as house ruins, cairns and stone fences that remind us of the hard work of past generations on the poor land.

Clearing for new meadows along watercourses

In 2024, we cleared a hay meadow along the Rönnebodaån-Bivarödsån river in Nedraryd. The meadow was previously overgrown with birch, alder and salix. After clearing, mowing will once again be possible, as well as grazing. In the long term, meadow flowers are expected to return, as well as pollen- and nectar-seeking insects. Funding is provided by the EU-funded Life Restored project.

Varied nature

The wooded pastures dominate in Nedraryd nature reserve, but the density of the canopy varies within the area and creates a variety of microclimates. Oak and birch are the most common tree species and the reserve contains some large and dead trees, which are important for many insects. Here and there you can also find pollarded maples and birches from the late 1800s. In the southern part of the reserve, rice and grass heaths with abundant juniper bushes take over. Along the Rönnebodaån river there are wetter areas with wet meadow vegetation.

Species-rich land

The great variety of habitat types and the long continuity of grazing have given rise to a very species-rich plant and animal life in Nedraryd. Among other things, there are several red-listed plants such as bell gentian, haymaking creeper, spruce spurge and summer violet. A significant proportion of the species in the reserve are dependent on grazing and there are also cat's foot, pig's root, bluebell, hay rattle, meadow violet, buttercups, pea-pod and the orchid Virgin Mary's keys. The mosaic-like flora has in turn given rise to a rich insect life with a number of rare species such as the lesser mongrel swarm, meadow metalwing and the common sand bee.

Rare fungi

Nedraryd is also home to a number of fungi worthy of protection, mainly different types of meadow fungi. The red-listed mushrooms clay ground fungus and the waxcap are examples of species that have been found in the reserve.

Bird life

Several insectivorous birds thrive in the reserve, including many different warblers, black and white flycatchers, kingfisher and barn swallow. Woodpeckers such as the green wren, the common chough and the great spotted woodpecker have also been seen in the area, and the red kite often hovers over the open areas.

Cultural-historical traces

The cultural-historical remains in the area show that it has been used by people for a long time. There are, among other things, five ruins of farmhouses and farm buildings, a ruined earth cellar, a spring, field terraces, fossil fields, stone fences, wooden enclosures, cairns and a number of pollarded trees.

Regulations

Within Nedraryd Nature Reserve it is forbidden to:

1. dig, drill, paint or in any other way damage fixed natural objects or surfaces such as boulders or soil formations
2. remove wood, damage living or dead standing or fallen trees or shrubs,
3. dig up plants, or pick plants for commercial use,
4. light fires other than in camping stoves
5. set up a tent, caravan, motorhome or similar
6. drive motorized vehicles
7. arrange competitions or other activities that could disturb plants and animals, such as cycling
8. bring dogs or other pets unless on a leash
9. place out or put up notice boards, signs, posters or similar.

Furthermore, without permission from the Country Administrative Board it is forbidden to:.

10. catch insects, spiders, gastropods or other invertebrate animals other than by netting, hand picking or other selective method with subsequent reintroduction within the nature reserve. The requirement for reintroduction does not apply to individual voucher specimens of each species on condition that the record is logged in the reporting system Artportalen, or an equivalent national database for threatened species, and that the collection is not contrary to the species protection regulations.

11. collect mosses, lichens or wood-living fungi with the exception of individual voucher specimens,

12. place out foreign objects (such as geocaches or similar).
