Beskrivelse
A few kilometers east of Tomelilla town is the nature reserve Högaborg. The reserve is located in a flat agricultural landscape but contains some small ponds with an extremely rich frog life. Here you can find, among other things, the unusual onion frog.
Högaborg consists mainly of open pasture and planted oak forest. A couple of planted spruce groves are also found in the reserve. Most of the reserve area has been used as arable land during the 20th century, and smaller parts have been subject to quarrying.
Onion frogs
Högaborg is located in an area that previously had significant populations of onion frogs, and in 1994 the species was observed at a small water in the area. The onion frog is typical of the open agricultural landscape and thrives in areas with nutrient-rich small waters. As it burrows during the day and during hibernation, it requires sandy or light soils that it can dig in. In Högaborg, the species has one of its strongest strongholds in the country.
Other amphibians
The onion frog is just one of the many amphibians that thrive in Karkkila. There are also leaf frogs, long-legged frogs, bell frogs, common frogs, common toads and great and small newts. Attempts have also been made to plant green spotted toads in the reserve.
Backswallows
As well as amphibians, humpback swallows can also be seen in the reserve. They dig their tunnel-shaped nests in the gravel slopes of the old quarry area.

Regler
**Within the area, special rules and restrictions apply to the right of public access.
For example, it is forbidden to:
- having a dog unleashed
- make fires outside designated areas
- camping outside designated areas
- pitching a caravan/mobile home outside designated areas
- riding or driving a horse
- disturb the surroundings
It is important to note that this is only a selection of the rules.
Full regulations for visitors
In addition to regulations and prohibitions in other laws and regulations, it is forbidden to:
- affixing any board, placard, poster, sign, inscription or similar device
- digging or otherwise damaging any natural object, surface formation, fence or other device
- capture or collect insects or other animals or otherwise disturb wildlife
- break branches, fell or otherwise damage living or dead trees and shrubs
- use a radio, tape recorder, musical instrument or similar in a disruptive manner
- drive a motorized vehicle other than on roads designated for the purpose,
- camping, setting up a caravan or parking other than in places allocated for the purpose
- ride or drive a horse without the consent of the landowner
- make a fire other than in places set aside for the purpose,
- bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet,
- organize competitions or conduct activities that may disturb the natural environment
