Beskrivelse

Fårabackarna is a municipal reserve in Trelleborg municipality. The reserve is a small remnant of the pastoral landscape, the land that existed outside the fenced farms and fields of the old farming community. The reserve is located along the shore of the Baltic Sea and is home to an interesting sandy steppe flora.

Surrounded by buildings

Fårabackarna has been a nature reserve since 2008, established by Trelleborg municipality. The area is used for outdoor recreation and sheep grazing in the northern parts. There are significant natural values on the moor. The surrounding landscape is very flat and is surrounded by holiday homes and villas.

Sandy pastures

The bedrock at Fårabackarna consists in its upper part of limestone (so-called Danian limestone). It has a varying hardness with a high flint content. It is covered by layers of sand with a thin cover of vegetation on top. The sand has formed fossil dunes that spread out on the wide beach embankments. In some places, the drift sand has formed irregular dunes several meters thick.

Interesting sand dune flora

The beach heath at Fårabackarna is home to an interesting flora. Some species found in the area are part of the sandy steppe vegetation that is more commonly found along the beaches in Österlen. The vegetation of the sandy steppes includes the protected field bindweed with fine, gray-violet bell-shaped flowers. Another plant that enriches the heath is the fragrant almond flower. Field wormwood and yellow poppy are other plant species that belong to the dry heath flora.

In the wetter areas, you can find bristlewort and stonewort. Heather and autumn bracken are threatened species that rarely grow in the area.

Outdoor life

This nature reserve is located in an area that is widely used for recreation, especially during the summer with bathers using the bathing-friendly beach. There are no marked trails in the area, but there are paths to follow across the beach heath. You can also wander freely or walk along the beach. If you follow the beach a few kilometers to the southwest, you will reach the nature conservation area Beddinge strandhed Link to another website.. It is also possible to cycle along the coast on the Sydkustleden which runs between Simrishamn and Helsingborg. There is a parking lot just east of the reserve and the nearest bus stop is Skateholm Brunnsbovägen.

Remember to take your rubbish home.
