Handlinger

Beskrivelse

Christinelund's broadleaf forest is located near the coast towards Öresund, midway between Höganäs and Helsingborg. The forest is one of the last remnants of a previously heavily cultivated deciduous forest on inland land. The reserve includes a hay meadow with pollarded lime trees. Christinelund also bears traces of Stone Age settlements and prehistoric sandstone gullies. An unmarked circular trail of about 1 km takes you around the western part of the reserve.

Deciduous forest and water

The vegetation in the reserve is varied and characterized by emerging and overflowing water. Oak, beech, lime, ash and alder are common, often together with a shrub layer of hawthorn, hazel, and yew. On the ground, woodland sedge often dominates. On drier soils, creeping thistle is most common. Alder or wild garlic dominates in damp areas.

Deer and birds

The forest provides good cover for a small population of deer. The dense bushes are also home to many small birds. Old hollow trees are excellent nesting sites for cavity-nesting birds such as wood pigeons and barn owls.

Restored hay meadow

Part of an old hay meadow has been restored in the reserve. Adjacent to the meadow, a section of lime forest is managed as a coppice forest, i.e. with regular cutting (pollarding) of root and stump shoots. In the past, coppicing was aimed at securing the area's need for sticks and slings for fencing and tools, among other things.

Ancient monuments

The surrounding area is rich in ancient remains, and in the immediate vicinity there are traces of three Stone Age settlements. In the stream there are prehistoric grinding channels, i.e. channels in sandstone that were created where stone axes were ground. At a farm in the southeastern part of the reserve, there has been a mill facility and further up the gorge you can see the remains of a mill pond.

Outdoor life

In the western part of the reserve there is a parking lot and an approximately 1 km long circular loop that is unmarked. The loop takes you both through deciduous forest with coarse old oak and beech, and to hay meadows and deciduous meadows with top-hewn linden trees that are regularly hammered (pruned).

Remember to take your trash home.
