Beskrivelse
Ärtan and Bönan are located in Tjörröd. This is where Höganäs' mining era started, and the coal is only a few meters below the surface. When you visit this nature reserve close to the town, you will be greeted by mining remains, known as warp piles, in a varied landscape with both old trees and meadows. Maybe have a barbecue at the picnic area inside the reserve?
The name Ärtan and Bönan
Ärtan and Bönan are located in the north-eastern part of Höganäs. Here you'll find everything from open grasslands to shrublands and deciduous forest. When coal was mined in the 1800s, there were two mine shafts here - number 18 (called "attan") and number 19. The name Ärtan and Bönan may have come from the pronunciation 'attan', which sounded like 'pea', so shaft 19 may have been 'bönan'. It may also have come from the shapes of the two larger spoil heaps - one rounded and the other long and narrow.
Insect gnawing and bird song
Much of the land in the nature reserve is old farmland. During the 1940s and 1950s, sandstone was also quarried in the area. Today, there are grasslands and younger forests and heathland. On the old warp piles, however, you can find much older trees. Several rare beetles live in the old birches and aspens. Many fungi and birds also thrive in the varied nature of Ärtan and Bönan. Among the birds you can hear the drumming of woodpeckers and the chorus of warblers.
Outdoor life
This wooded area near Höganäs is used daily for walking and running, especially the exercise trail with wood chips. An accessible walkway with stone dust leads to the barbecue area in the central part of the reserve. There are also open spaces for ball games. Remember to take your rubbish home. The area is accessible by bus (350 meters west of the reserve), car, bicycle and on foot.
