The castle ruins rest on Slottsholmen in the middle of the narrow strait in Slätbaken. Here, history has been marked by kingship, bloody battles and tough negotiations. The ruin is open to visitors every day of the year. You buy a ticket for the gate from the machine at the parking lot. After that, you can roam freely inside the grounds. Enter the courtyard, climb the beautiful round tower, wander around the park and the herb garden. Audio guides are available to borrow and guided tours with a private guide can be booked. Fakta
Stegeborg was one of Sweden's most important strongholds and a royal castle from the Middle Ages until the 17th century. Stegeborg is first mentioned in writing in 1310 as "Stäkeborg", where "stäk" comes from the piles that were in the water around the islet. Among other things, these provided protection against foreign fleets trying to get further into Slätbaken. The piles are dated to the 8th century AD. The first known version of Stegeborg was built in the early 14th century. Since then, the castle has been demolished, rebuilt and extended. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle was expanded into a magnificent Renaissance castle by King Johan III. In 1730, the Crown sold the castle for building materials. During the 20th century, the ruins were excavated and simple repairs were carried out. Stegeborg's current owners have also carried out an extensive renovation program with the support of the National Heritage Board.
