Beskrivelse
The Liljekonvaljholmen nature reserve consists of two headlands in Lake Sällingsjön. They are separated by a strait between Sällingsjön and Känässjön. The area has a natural aspen-rich mixed forest that is home to a rich bird life and a rich flora of mosses, lichens and fungi.
Bird-rich lake lowland
The lakes in the area were lowered by around one meter in the 1800s, to convert wet meadows to arable land. Along the new shores of the lakes, deciduous shore marshes were formed. The wet riparian forests are home to a wide range of birds. You might see the mighty bird of prey, the osprey, gliding through the air in search of small fish in the shallow lakes.
Dead trees are alive
Näset and Liljekonvaljeholmen are covered in deciduous mixed forest, on land that was once used as meadows and fields. There are plenty of old and coarse aspens in the reserve. Birds as well as a wide range of insects, fungi and lichens thrive in the leafy crown, bark and trunk of the aspen. Species that depend on the aspen for their survival. The soil in the reserve is partly affected by limestone, and species favoring limestone thrive here, such as bladderworts, cowslips and ferns.
The aspen ticks help the woodpeckers
Almost all aspen trees are attacked by the fungus aspen tick. You can usually find them on branch scars on living aspen trunks. The fungus doesn't kill the tree, but it causes the tree to rot. The rot in turn causes the tree to eventually become hollow, and makes it easier for woodpeckers to peck at the trunks. If you look closely, you will see that several of the large aspens have nesting holes where woodpeckers and other hole builders nest. The reserve is also home to the rare species large aspen tick. The fastidious tick is usually found on large aspens, high up on the trunk or right up in the crown of the tree.
Accessibility
Liljekonvaljholmen belongs to level 1 in the County Administrative Board's leveling of the county's nature reserves. This means that there are no marked trails or other facilities for visitors to the reserve. However, a kilometer-long path leads from the parking lot and out to the headland called Näset. Liljekonvaljeholmen is more difficult to reach.
About the gravel road to the reserve
Please note that the road to the nature reserve consists of smaller utility roads and is occasionally affected by felling, tractor driving, frost and more. As a car-borne visitor, you must assess for yourself whether you and your vehicle can make the journey to the nature reserve without damage or getting stuck.
