Långa tjärnarna, Naturreservat

The Långa tjärnarna nature reserve is a large wilderness-like forest area. The forest is old and bears traces of forest fires and charcoal cutting. Welcome to a hike among forest lakes, spruce forests, old pines, leafy forests and beautiful lakes.

Traces of older fires

The old forest is mostly spruce, most of which are 130 years old. There are also a few pine trees that are older than 250 years and sometimes have damage from forest fires, known as fire sounds. These are visible as cracks along the trunk, with exposed wood and carbon residues. At the edges of the cracks, the bark has often formed a hollow. Before the 20th century, forest fires were more common and the forest could burn several times a century.

Plenty of dead trees

Because the forest has been left to its own devices and has not burned for a long time, it has accumulated a large stock of dead trees. This is quite natural in a forest that is left to its own devices and favors many unusual wood-living fungi, such as the woolly adelgid and the border adelgid. Woodpeckers also appreciate the dead wood, where they can look for insect larvae. Here in the reserve you can see great spotted woodpeckers as well as three-toed woodpeckers and woodpeckers.

Osprey and capercaillie thrive here

If you are here in early spring, you may see the capercaillie playing or perhaps hear a barn owl calling in the forest. In summer you can see the osprey riding over the lakes. When the bird rides, it stands still in the air - flying on the spot. Ospreys are attracted by the fish-rich lakes and can fly far from the bottom to reach good fishing spots. Rare plants and lichens The forest is dotted with boulders and cliffs. The boulders are sometimes beautifully draped with mosses and lichens. On some of the boulders, the very rare Norwegian beak lichen grows. Another unusual species that thrives here is the violet-grey thorn lichen. You can also find the small orchid knotweed growing in the moss on boulders or on the ground in the spruce forest.

Accessibility

In Långa tjärnarna there are about 8 kilometers of marked paths. On the shore of Lake Stora Kloten there is a shelter with a fireplace.

Is there firewood?

Firewood is available at the fire pit. Remember to burn in moderation, so that there is enough firewood for future guests. The firewood is replenished regularly, but we cannot guarantee availability at all times. If you want to be sure to be able to make a fire - bring your own firewood. It is not allowed to burn sticks and branches from the forest in the reserve.
