Handlinger

Beskrivelse

The Kilaskogen nature reserve is located on the edge of the area known as Fasaskogen. Here you will find a varied and large-blocked old forest that easily brings to mind John Bauer's magical fairytale world. If you like mosses and lichens, you've really come to the right place!

Part of Fasaskogen's block-rich old-growth forest

The wild and bouldery landscape of southern Kilsbergen has come to be known as Fasaskogen. The large amount of boulders is a memory of the inland ice. The forest has clear characteristics of the diversity of the primeval forest, with trees of different ages as well as dead and dying trees. Conifers dominate, but there are also aspen and birch trees. Kilaskogen is located in an area with a long history of mining. Large quantities of charcoal were needed in both smelters and forges. There are traces of charcoal kilns in the reserve where charcoal was made.

Dead wood lives

Old-growth forests with plenty of dead wood are an eldorado for fungi such as the wood tick, woolly tick and starry stonewort. The decaying dead wood is also a perfect habitat for a variety of small animals and other organisms, species that cannot survive in modern forests. A pine stump with fire marks can be found in the eastern part of the reserve.

Moisture-loving mosses and lichens

Typical of Kilaskogen and other parts of Fasaskogen are all the mosses and lichens that cover trees, ground and boulders. The area has a fairly stable, high level of humidity that allows a variety of mosses and lichens to thrive. As forests such as these are becoming increasingly rare, we find a large number of rare and endangered species here. The observant will find coral lichen, cat's foot lichen, long-limbed moss and curly-leaved moss, among others. There are also rare plants such as the small orchid knotweed.

Accessibility

Kilamossen belongs to level 1 in the county administrative board's leveling of the county's nature reserves, which means that the reserve has a wilderness character and lacks outdoor recreation facilities.
