Gammelhyttan

One kilometer west of Sixtorp, the trail passes Velamshyttebäcken on the site of Gammelhyttan. The oldest smelter, probably from the Middle Ages, was replaced in 1638 with a new smelter that was closed in 1819 when the smelter was merged with Mullhyttan. Of the facilities, the slag heaps and a stone crown that may be the remains of the smelter pipe, as well as the remains of the saw that was operated here after the smelter era, now remain. There are large mine holes in the area, which suggests that the smelter had the unique condition of having had ore resources immediately adjacent to the smelter site. Within the smelting area there is an open deciduous forest called Gammelhytteängen. It is managed by Västernärkes nature conservation association.
