Björkön runt

Time required: 2.5 hours one way. Difficulty: 2. Medium, involves paddling on open water. Paddling along the beach is recommended. At Åstabadet there are good parking facilities and landing possibilities both from the sandy beach and the jetty. There is also a toilet at the bath. The paddle to the windbreak on western Björkön is protected from easterly winds and it is possible to paddle close to the beach all the way. On western Björkön there is a windbreak with doors on the shore that offers a view of Mellanfjärden. The shelter can accommodate 4-5 overnight stays. There are also two fireplaces and firewood but limited tent space. For camping, the island's central grassy areas, which can be reached from the eastern harbor, are better suited. When you paddle south along Björkön and through southern Björkösundet, you pass Göksholm Castle dating back to the 13th century. Once you've passed the southern strait, you'll reach the island's eastern harbor. Here, both canoeists and boaters can dock. Two shelters with associated fireplaces and a privy with a wood store are close to the harbor, and a short walk takes you to the tent areas at the fireplaces in the central parts of the island. Take the opportunity to stretch your legs and see more of the island by hiking the circular trail that starts from the harbor. The paddle from eastern Björkön to Åstabadet is largely protected from westerly winds and it is possible to paddle close to the shore all the way. The nature along the route is characterized by deciduous forest and there are many reeds along the beaches. Watch out! You have a good chance of seeing both sea eagles and ospreys here.
