Angsjön, Naturreservat

Angsjön Nature Reserve is a forested lake surrounded by wetlands and ancient forests. Take a walk on the hiking trail, look for a lark falcon, discover unusual plants or just enjoy the peace and quiet.

Many moisture lovers

The landscape of the reserve is a mosaic of natural forest, water, marshland, islands and bog islands. It is a mix of habitats with a high and even humidity that favors moisture-demanding fungi, lichens and mosses. Among other things, you can find rarities such as the barn lichen and the Norwegian beak lichen. The barn lichen grows on old and dry, standing pine trunks, while the Norwegian beaked lichen can be found on lodgepole pine and boulders.

Bird watching

Angsjön is located in a lake-rich stretch of Kilsbergen that is linked by the hiking trails Tiosjöarsleden and Angsjöleden. The area offers a very rich bird life worthy of protection, so binoculars come in handy! Lark falcon and Eurasian bittern, among others, nest here. Ospreys can sometimes be seen hunting for the lake's fish and are easily recognized by their white underside. When it spots its prey, it dives like an arrow into the water.

Hydroelectric power

Notice the floating and waterlogged moss patches in the lake. They show that the water level has been raised to make better use of the water's power. In the middle of the lake is an island of centuries-old coniferous forest. Due to infestations of the stickleback, there are large amounts of coarse dead wood in the form of dry trees, high stumps and spruce flames.

Was utilized

An old map from the 1800s shows that large parts of the reserve were then meadows kept open by haymaking. The hay was used as winter feed for the animals. The same map also shows that there was a croft called Mon in the northern part of the reserve.

Flood and scent

The reserve provides habitat for a number of endangered plants. On boulders and tree trunks along the lake, the rare hairwort grows. Because it needs alternating wet and dry conditions, it is linked to the shore zone that is flooded annually. In the forest around the lake, you can find, among other things, fragrant under-violet and lock fern, which in the past was believed to be able to open locks and shackles.

Accessibility

Angsjön belongs to level 1 in the County Administrative Board's leveling of the county's nature reserves, which means that the reserve has a wilderness character and lacks outdoor recreation facilities. The Angsjö trail runs around the reserve.
