Guollejávrre

Guollejávrre Nature Reserve is a vast area that offers a stunning variety of natural environments. Here, you can explore mountain heaths, shimmering lakes, meandering streams, and expansive wetlands. The towering mountains and deep, fire-pruned forests create an impressive backdrop, and from the summits of the highest peaks, you can enjoy breathtaking views over the sprawling forests, marshes, and lakes below. This is a place where the beauty of nature unfolds in every direction, inviting adventurers to lose themselves in its wonders.

The forests of Guollejávrre have largely been shaped by wildfires that swept through the area 100 to 200 years ago, leaving behind intriguing remnants. Charred dead wood, both standing and lying down, provides a habitat for the rare red-listed dwarf cup lichen, which resembles a gray stem topped with a meatball. If you're lucky, you might also spot the beautiful blue chanterelle mushroom in the sandy soils of the reserve's ancient pine forests, known as Sand Pine Forests—a rare and fascinating type of forest.

Among the impressive peaks, such as Dájdavárre, Várddo, and Hammarberget, the forest gives way to sparse birch, spruce, and pine, or open mountain heath. From these high points, you can see the large wetlands, which are home to a rich flora including the royal fern and meadow orchids. In the southern part of the reserve lies the large lake Guollejávrre, which lends its name to the entire area. The lakes and streams are part of the Pite River system, which is included in the European network of valuable nature, Natura 2000.
