Beskrivelse
In the mid-15th century, a castle made of medieval brick and stone was constructed near Lake Vidöstern. The fortress is first mentioned in 1477 as the residence of the councilor and knight Gustav Olsson Stenbock. The preserved walls are entirely made of stone, and around the castle, remnants of medieval brick indicate its exclusivity. Beneath the eastern part of the building lies a cellar with the only surviving entrance. A moat was dug between the castle and the mainland, creating the impression that it was situated on an island. Stenhusholmen Castle at Toftaholm was built to defend Sweden against the Danes, and its strategic location along Lagastigen was crucial. In the 16th century, the castle was ravaged by Danish troops but continued to serve as a residence during the Vasa era.
According to legend, there was a tunnel beneath the moat through which Gustav Vasa escaped, losing two precious rings in the process. It was at this estate that Gustav Vasa met his third wife, Katarina Stenbock, in 1554. Today, only the castle’s ruins remain visible.
