Beskrivelse
The name Råön, or Rået as the island is also called, derives from the word rå in the sense of deer and derives from the formerly rich wildlife on the island. Råön is located in the eastern part of Lake Bolmen.
The nature reserve covers parts of the eastern side of the island. Within the area there is a Stone Age settlement and a large clearance cairn area that shows the location of settlements and land use in earlier times. On the island you can follow a path that passes through the beautiful beech forest and the area with ancient cairns.
The reserve, which has been protected since 2006, contains beech, deciduous and mixed coniferous forests. The greatest natural values are in the old beech forest, which has a rich flora of tree-living mosses and lichens. The oldest beech trees here are probably more than 200 years old. Examples of threatened species that grow on the trunks of the old trees are sawfly lichen, lesser lichen, beech spring lichen and beech feather moss. There is also a lot of dead wood in the forest, which is an important habitat for many wood-living fungi and insects.
In the western part of the reserve, where most of the spruce grows, and in the forests growing along the shores, there is also a lot of dead wood in various stages of decomposition and older trees that favor a rich plant and animal life.
