Handlinger

Beskrivelse

The reserve's varied nature, from the lush inner archipelago to the bare islets and skerries, is home to many plants and animals. In the brackish waters of Virbofjärden, pike and perch spawn. Old oaks and pines are home to insects and fungi. And waders, gulls and terns nest on the barren outer skerries.

Forest grazing

Nature on Ekö is characterized by hundreds of years of grazing. According to old writings, there were three pigs in the 1500s. Sheep and cattle have probably also grazed on the island in summer. The forest around the old farms of Grytmaren and Österdal has also been grazed for several hundred years. The animals' grazing and trampling contributed to the forest becoming patchy and light. It remains so to some extent today, even though the grazing animals are long gone.

The discerning inhabitants of the trees

The reserve's old pines and oaks are very valuable homes for fungi, lichens and insects. One example is the rare relict beetle, a heat-loving beetle whose larvae live in the sunlit, thick bark of pines. The pine shoot beetle only appears on pines when the trees are over 150 years old. Ox tongue fungus and oak tick grow on large oaks. If the oaks are hollow, they may be home to the unusual leatherback beetle.

Bird protection area

The area east of Måsskär is a bird protection area with a ban on access between 1/4 - 10/7 to avoid disturbing nesting birds.
