Here you can experience the Mittland forest of Öland at its best! The nature reserve offers beautiful hazel forests, flowering wet meadows and alvar. And it is home to over a hundred different rare species. Walk slowly and you may see some of the insects, fungi and plants that thrive in the reserve's varied nature.
You are in the middle of the Midlands - an area whose species richness and cultural values have few equivalents in Europe. Vanserum-Bäck is one of the most exciting nature reserves in Mittlandet. Villagers from Södra Bäck, Norra Bäck and Vanserum have been grazing their animals, harvesting hazelnuts and collecting firewood here since probably the Bronze Age.
There are plenty of hazel trees in Vanserum-Bäck. Hazel groves are low-growing forests where hazel grows like huge bouquets. This peculiar environment is home to a large number of rare and endangered species, mainly various fungi.
It gets warm in the shelter of the hazel bushes in early spring. Here you can see the first butterflies of spring. Before the leaves shade the ground, dense carpets spread out with cowslips, water lilies, cornflowers and orchids. But summer also offers flowers, such as the woodland knotweed and the cold knotweed. You might see the rare cowslip butterfly. Autumn is the time of fungi. Some years, lots of strange species appear, a cavalcade of color and shape!
You can also see orchids in the reserve's wet meadows. If you look among the tufts and find the slender, brown-black axa, you know that there is fresh spring water flowing in the ground. You'll also find plenty of mayweed and sedges.
Finds have been made at Vanserum's springs that indicate that there was a sacrificial site here in prehistoric times. On Södra and Norra Bäck's outfields west of Lindsmossen there are a large number of graves and burial grounds from the Iron Age, but also graves from the very oldest time; the Stone Age rock coffins.
