Beskrivelse

In Vårum, a valuable older coniferous forest is protected. The reserve is a haven for species that have difficulty surviving in a modern forest. An old farm road runs through the area, which used to connect crofts with small fields and meadows.

Woodlands

The terrain in the nature reserve is rocky and hilly. The forest is dominated by spruce, but pine, aspen, oak, birch and alder also grow here. From the highest parts in the southeast, which are 130 meters above sea level, the ground slopes steeply down to arable land in the south and a stream ravine in the west. The stream plunges in small drops and rushes between rocks and boulders.

Valuable natural environment

Forests that have long been unaffected by man, such as this one in Vårum, are called natural forests. In a natural forest, there are plenty of dead, hollow trees and fallen trunks. This is what a large part of Sweden's forests looked like a few hundred years ago. Today, only scraps remain and the species that depend on the decaying wood and the hollow trees are languishing.

Species rich

The flora of the nature reserve is rich. In the rich soil grows witch hazel, a herb that can grow almost a meter high. The fruiting bodies of the pine shoot can be seen on pines that are at least 150 years old. Missne grows by the stream, and lungwort thrives on deciduous trees near the water.

Old farmland

Adjacent to the stream in the southwest are old cultivated fields. According to maps from the beginning of the 19th century, there was a meadow here called Qvarnängen, as there were two small mills nearby. In the mid-19th century there were also some fields by the stream. In the nature reserve you can also see traces of three old crofts, Fridhem, Gärdet and Åkärr. A winding farm road that connected the crofts with fields and meadows can still be walked today.
