Beskrivelse
Tveta church is one of the first churches in eastern Småland.
The church was a gathering place for sailors when the Emån was navigable. The nave, with meter-thick walls, is the part that remains since the church was built in the 12th century. The knotted timber porch was added in the 17th century. The belfry was built in 1662, and the sacristy and five-sided choir were built in 1726.
The church's oldest furnishings date from the 20th century: a saint's figure, the iron-clad church door and the remains of a baptismal font.
When the church facade was renovated in 1993, ship carvings depicting two 13th-century cogs were discovered. Similar ship carvings have previously only been found on Gotland and Öland.
Throughout history, the site has been a place of worship where people sacrificed and bled. just north of the church are Odin's and Thor's sacrificial springs.
