Beskrivelse

Trässö, in the borderland between bare, undeveloped islets in the east and forested mainland in the west. Windswept, lean pine forest covers almost the entire island. The forest is virtually untouched and has a wild character.

Barren rocky areas

On Trässö you walk over more or less wooded rocky areas. Along the western shore, the gray rock plunges down to the sea in steep cliffs. The eastern shore is more low-lying, here the rock is shaped like mighty whale ridges that break the water surface. The island's windswept forest is low-growing and dominated by pine.

The inhabitants of the pine

Old pine trees provide homes, shelter and food for a range of plants and animals. The older a pine tree is, the more valuable it is as a home. Many of the pine's inhabitants are small and can be difficult to spot. These include ants, beetles and caterpillars that live under the bark or inside the trunk. But small holes and tunnels in the pine bark and roots reveal that you have found a beetle's home. The bugs become food for the birds of the forest.

Traces of ancient archipelago inhabitants

The southern part of Trässö was once inhabited. You can still see traces of the settlement in the form of a number of house foundations. And to the east and north of the old courtyard, well-made stone walls wind around. As a resident of the archipelago, you had to have many strings to your bow. The people of Trässö made their living from farming, fishing and livestock, but they also picked berries and grew fruit. The settlement on Trässö was abandoned in 1929.
