Beskrivelse
Tingstad tiles are two pieces, just over three meters high, cut limestone tiles that are erected high up on an embankment. In an open landscape, the tiles are visible from afar and they have probably served as landmarks for those who have traveled across the alvar. From many villages around the alvar, inconspicuous roads lead to the tiles, which are Öland's most famous courthouse.
The place is first mentioned in a document from 1393. According to folk tradition, people from the surrounding villages gathered to settle common matters, resolve disputes and pass judgment. It has also been suggested that the tiles, which stand at a 90-degree angle to each other, may have served as a sundial, with the narrowest shadow from each tile marking the beginning and end of the event. No one knows when the tiles were erected. But they stand on a burial ground where there are remains from both the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Among other things, there are several large burial cairns from the Bronze Age nearby.
