Along the coast between Halltorp and Solliden there is valuable broadleaf forest. The forest is home to a number of unusual species, from birds to small lichens. Part of the species-rich coastal forest is protected in the Strandtorp reserve.
Many different deciduous trees grow in the reserve. The most common is oak, which is joined here and there by elm and ash. The occasional elm, maple, lime, birch, oxel and birdberry also grow here. Under the tree crowns, hazel, woodruff and other shrubs form dense curtains.
The springtime flora of the deciduous forest is very magnificent. This is when carpets of white, blue and yellow anemones spread out along with cowslips, lungwort and spring peas. In the treetops, lesser flycatchers, blackcaps, garden warblers and warblers hold concerts.
The forest in Strandtorp has looked after itself for a long time. The oldest oaks and elms are 150 years old. Rotten trunks lie on the ground, and new trees are sprouting in the sunlit glades created when the old trees fell. But it's not just the ravages of time that have contributed to the presence of dead trees in the area. Strandtorp's forests have been hit hard by both ash dieback and Dutch elm disease, which has led to the death of almost all the ash and elm trees.
