Beskrivelse

The Strandhagen nature reserve has been established with one purpose - to preserve the rare spring daffodil. The beautiful yellow flower is one of Öland's botanical gems. One third of the island's population grows in this reserve and south of the nature reserve.

**Rare flower

The spring daffodil, or arontor rose as it is also called, is one of Öland's great rarities. Öland, Stora Karlsö and southern Gotland are the only known places in Sweden where it grows wild. The biggest threat to the spring radon is that the land becomes overgrown. This means that the low-growing adonis is quickly outcompeted by tall grasses and herbs. Another threat, which we humans cannot control, is overcast and rainy weather. Then the spring adonis can be attacked by fungi. Moreover, if the sun is not shining, the spring daffodil does not bother to open its flowers. It is then closed to insects and the flowers miss their chance to be pollinated.

**Helpful bees and ants

The spring radon is spread with the help of insects. Various species of sand bees are the main pollinators. Bees spread pollen from one flower to another. In this way, the flowers are fertilized and can develop fruits with seeds. The oil-rich and fragrant fruits attract meadow ants. The ants carry away the fruits and thus also the seeds. And if all goes well, a new spring daffodil will germinate in the calcareous soil, some distance from its mother plant!
