Beskrivelse

In the nature reserve you can experience windswept pine forests, ancient granite cliffs and bird-rich bays and skerries. The nature is perfect for swimming, beach picnics and relaxing walks through berry-rich old-growth forests.

Nature of the islands

Blueberry-rich rocky pine forests spread out on the reserve's larger islands. The oldest pines are around 200 years old. In exposed positions, the trees are crooked, tamed by weather and wind. A range of organisms live in the old pines, from ospreys and water crows to relict bucks and other beetles. Between the rocky outcrops are hollows with small bogs adorned with water hemlock, tufa and cranberries.

Bird island

Långa grund and Skomakareskär are two low skerries frequented by gulls, gulls and terns. Breeding birds include eider, black-headed gull, herring gull, common tern and sandwich tern. If you're lucky, you might spot a common tern, which is a regular visitor to the area.

Interesting geology

On the reserve's islands you can walk on 1.8 billion-year-old Småland granite. In several places you can see fine ice grooves in the bare granite slopes. The grooves were formed when rocks frozen in the ice sheet scraped against the rocks. The land uplift that followed when the land was freed from the enormous weight of the ice is also evident in the area. Many of the former bays are now enclosed lakes or even marshland.

Lagoons and shallow bays

More than half of the reserve's surface is covered by water. In shallow bays, flats and glades, aquatic plants spread out in dense meadows. These underwater meadows are home to shells, crustaceans and

insects. These small animals feed fish, fish fry and seabirds. The waters around the islands are also valuable spawning grounds for fish such as pike, perch and roach.
