Beskrivelse
The calcareous soils of Stora Alvaret have been grazed for millennia, giving rise to a peculiar flora and fauna. Many people make a pilgrimage to Vicklebyalvaren in the spring to admire the sumptuous flowers.
Flower viewing
Vicklebyalvaren attracts many flower lovers. In May, a sea of orchids spreads out. Adam's and Eve's and Saint Peter's keys are particularly abundant, and together with cowslips, they color the alvar in yellow, pink and violet. Later in the season, marsh marigold and the rare honeyflower bloom on the wet meadows of the alvar.
Rich in birds
For those who want to watch birds, Lindskärren is recommended. In spring and early summer, waders such as redshanks, curlews, lapwings, greater sandpipers and ringed plovers can be seen in and around the marshes. Sometimes you can also see marsh pipit.
Geological formation
In the eastern parts of the reserve, a strange landscape emerges - the Resmo zone. Here the limestone bedrock has cracked, collapsed and formed a karst depression. In the depression, water has eroded limestone into pits and ridges and underground streams.
Inhabited for a long time
Humans have lived and worked on Öland for the past 5000 years. There are several ancient remains in the reserve, such as the intriguing altar stone with its ship's settlement. There are also old roads, house foundations and stone walls.
