Solidö, Naturreservat

Handlinger
Beskrivelse
On Solidö you can experience something as unusual as living archipelago agriculture. Over the centuries, small-scale farming has created a mosaic of open fields, pastures and sparse forests. The varied nature is home to many plants and animals, such as the rare Apollo butterfly.
Farmed land
Solidö's land has been farmed for hundreds of years. Grazing and arable farming have kept the land open, although the extent of the forest has increased since the 1970s. Many of the rare plants and animals that live on Solidö depend on the mosaic landscape created by agriculture.
Light-loving herbs
Lean rocky pine forest spreads over large parts of Solidö. Scattered throughout the forest are old fields, which are no longer farmed. These bright glades are home to sedges, daisies and many other flowers. More flowers can be found in the pastures east of the village. Here you will find maidenhair fern, bluebell and cat's foot - small, tender species adapted to poor soil that has been grazed for generations.
Protected butterfly
If you visit Solidö in the summer, with a little luck you may see the beautiful Apollo butterfly - Europe's largest butterfly. Both the adult butterfly and the larvae need warmth to develop. They therefore seek out open rocky areas, where the sun's rays warm the rock. There must also be flower-rich land nearby, with thistles and bindweed, where the adult butterfly can obtain nectar. And then there must be lovage and white buttercup, because they are the caterpillars' food. There are many things that need to be right for the Apollo butterfly to thrive!
